Writing Tips: 4 Ways to Improve Your Writing Skills
Writing is difficult for many people, especially beginners who have just set their foot in this field. Becoming a better writer requires lots of practice and takes time. There are many ups & downs in a writer’s journey but the good news is that writing does not have to be too difficult. And it’s possible for everyone to improve their writing skills with a little discipline and a strong will to learn. Below we have gathered some tips for you on how to improve your writing skills.
-
Follow the basic principle of writing
Before you achieve your mastery of short story or poetry writing, the fundamental things you need to do is follow basic comprehension of writing, grammar, and spelling. This does not mean you need to enrol yourself in a prestigious creative writing program to know some rules. If you understand grammar and spelling basics, you are good.
However, you can improve by expanding your vocabulary because it can help you express yourself clearly through your work. Expanding vocabulary does not necessarily mean being able to recognize lots of words. It simply means you are able to use them correctly.
-
Read and imitate the writers you admire
Before we explain, let’s be clear on something – imitation is not the same as plagiarism. Don’t ever just copy others’ work and claim it as yours. Originality is the key for you as a writer. Find a handful of books or poetry of your favourite writers and analyze them. See how the lines or verses flow and find the meaning underneath every word written. By doing these, you will get a better understanding of different writing techniques.
Get an understanding of different styles and use them as references when you start writing. After some practice, you will eventually have developed your own style.
-
Don’t give up on your first draft
No one is perfect, and the same goes for the writers. But the best writers make it look easy to get it done. Still, when they first start, they feel anxious, whether their manuscript or draft will receive great feedback by the readers. And there’s a strong chance that you too are going to feel the same at some point. So, every time you finish your first draft, take a few minutes to rest and then go back on it with your creativity blood rushing to proofread and revise it to be better. Until you are satisfied.
-
